Drift Innovation X170 Review PDF Print E-mail

Let me start by saying that when I first saw the specs and pictures of the Drift Innovation X170 there were two things that came to mind, the first was that on paper it was a great value standard definition helmet camera and the second was that you can't miss the orange on it !

If you are not hung up on getting HD resolution or can't afford a full HD system like the ContourHD or the GoPro cameras ( keeping in mind the ContourHD is not waterproof and does not have a screen ) then this is a great value package.

A quick review of its features out of the box helps show the sort of value that you will get

  • Multiple Mounting Design
  • 1.5” Colour LCD Screen
  • RF Wireless Remote Control
  • Video and Photo Capture (up to 16GB)
  • Wide Angle Field of View (170°)
  • Hands Free Video and Photo

Mini DVR Initial Review PDF Print E-mail

The Mini DVR units that I ordered for evaluation have arrived and initial impressions are that this thing is tiny, in fact with Dimensions 75mm x 55mm x 20mm I believe it is the smallest DVR I have so far seen and this makes it a perfect size unit for a bikecam, helmetcam, racecam you name it the size makes it perfect.

In the box you get the DVR unit, a bullet cam, a set of male and female RCA cables for video in and out, 1400 mah Lithium Ion battery, battery charger and mini usb cable, driver disk, case for the mini DVR, two mounts for the bullet camera and a manual.

MiniDVR battery

The mini DVR unit has a 2.5" TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 920 x 240 Pixels that holds up pretty well in direct sunlight so in theory you could mount this unit on your dash or bars and the resolution is definately good enough for you to be able to check what your camera is capturing when you mount it.

Contour HD initial review PDF Print E-mail

After having my contour HD for over 2 weeks I have been waiting for the universal mount to arrive that would let me mount it to a 1/4" thread and use it with some of the new mounts I have fabricated but the universal mount has been put on back order and wont ship for another 2 weeks so I could not wait any longer and simply used the supplied mount that came with the camera to mount it under the nose of the bike so I could get some initial ideas on how it worked.

VIO POV 15 PDF Print E-mail

I have just taken delivery of my new VIO P.O.V 1.5 Moto kit and so Far I am pretty impressed with it just sitting in the box - I have not had a chance to put it on the bike yet as I still have some parts on their way so stay tuned for that review soon.

Until I get it on the bike I can review everything else though so here goes - VIO was formed back in 2000 which was around about the time I started playing with mounting camera's on bikes and jet planes so I have been watching their products with interest but they never really met my requirements until recently, they came close back in 2007 when they released the POV 1 but it just could not convince me to outlay the money as I was still morally opposed to using so much compression on the files as I was still doing most of my work for DVD and recompressing from DIVX to MPEG2 was bound to lose quality as far as I was concerned.

Recently however more and more of what I am doing is for use on the web and to do that you need to compress the hell out everything anyway so it was not so much of a concern and given I already have the ChaseCam PDR100 that is full MPEG2 DVD resolution I wasn't really compromising more like enhancing.

So then VIO released the POV 1.5 and more importantly they released the 1.5m Moto Kit which is basically the standard package that also has a power pack that you can run from your vehicle - perfect

PDR 100 Review PDF Print E-mail

I have been using the PDR100 as my primary solid state DVR for 3 years now upgrading after years of shooting footage with bullet cams plugged into the AV input of my Sony HandyCam.

At the time when I finally got enough money to afford a solid state video recorder I started my research to see which one would best suite my needs.

My needs were very specific because i was wanting to shoot and edit true DVD quality footage so anything that did not record natively in MPEG2 format at a resolution of 720x576 at a high bit rate was automatically dismissed as was anything that was hard drive based or could not be both battery powered and connected to an external power supply which immediately ruled out about 90% of most of the devices that were finally starting to appear on the market at the time.

The last criteria was the need for a LANC controller port and the dimensions had to fit underneath the pillion seat of my R1 and This left the ChaseCam system or the Stack DVR - both had exactly the specifications that I was looking for but the Stack system cost twice as much as the Chasecam so my decision was made and my order was placed.
